Digital fraud is accelerating - and psychological stress follows
Fraud and identity theft continue to increase across Sweden. According to Defentry’s latest report,
63% of Swedes fear BankID fraud the most, followed by card fraud (60%) and identity theft (51%).
Among those affected, 37% report psychological stress - almost as common as financial loss.
At the same time, 44% of Swedes say they would prefer to buy digital protection directly from their bank, far ahead of government agencies (13%) or insurance companies (12%).
This shows that banks still hold a trust advantage - but that confidence is quickly eroding.
“People expect their bank to protect them, but at Defentry we see a growing gap between people’s fear and their actual sense of safety. This is where banks and insurers can truly make a difference -by acting proactively,” says Christer Hernestig, Co-founder at Defentry.
Trust is shifting - and proactive protection is the new loyalty driver
The findings indicate that digital safety has become an emotional factor as much as a technical one.
Consumers increasingly expect their financial providers to offer proactive, human-centric protection - not just react after fraud occurs.
For banks and insurers, this represents both a responsibility and an opportunity: to strengthen customer relationships, reduce churn, and open new high-margin revenue streams through Digital Trust-as-a-Service models.
Defentry already supports several Nordic partners in delivering white-label fraud protection platforms, integrating real-time monitoring, AI-driven prevention and insurance-backed recovery into their core offerings.
About the survey
